I work with the very young here in Alberta. Our special need kids, aged 3.5 -5.5 started their online learning sessions this week with their development assistants and for my personal families, all went well. I’m looking to enrich their experience with field trips suitable for them? It would be great if there was some interaction. We use zoom and are just learning to work with links!

My daughter is in 3rd grade. Her teachers are doing a good job on engagement. They are doing a question of the day, 2 synchronous times for the students to ask questions, but finding they are just coming on to connect with teachers and peers, and having some gamification tasks that they students are really enjoying! All the academic items are due at the end of the week to not overwhelm them. I would love to see them add fieldtrips into the mix!

People are overwhelmed and have them search websites is another task… how to have USDLA experts organized as ‘consultants.’
Jane Choi-Doan
01:09:16
where can we find the template for jeopardy?
Erika Weiss
01:09:36
@Gil - use break out rooms during synchronous sessions so that students can together in small groups to solve problems
Md.Ahsan Ul Kabir
01:10:37

I provide a walking tour video (they are a little long but so nice) an engagement activity that has nothing to do specifically with the course. I believe the following YouTube video could be applied to geography or history classes also. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzjxFCqT-40

01:21:52
Agreed - we need to be empathetic an understanding that we are in a transition to a new normal
Giselle Pempedjian
01:23:33
absolutely, caring and understanding are essential👍
Rhonda Blackburn
01:24:04
I am hoping that the idea of empathy goes on even after this is all over. It is so hard to always know what all your students or employees are going through, so we should always listen and determine how they can be successful!

Absoutley, Janet! I feel the same here in Chicago. It highlights the lack of internet access and inequity for access to computers for students of all economic and ethnic backgrounds.

I am working with the Dallas Children's Theater to see how they can be relevant and the issue of inequality came up in our conversation. how can we make sure that ALL students have access to the arts! It is exciting to think about where this can all go!
Joe Rangitsch
01:28:19

Yes, it's a pleasure and honor to help support people who are new to the distance education field. It's been so interesting to see elearning/distance learning be all over the news as a NEW concept!
rbl50@aol.com
01:28:39
We need to rethink some assumptions… Who are the learners and their ‘learning guardians.’ Many people at all levels are bringing inappropriate assumptions to the new situation. I am observing unfair demands on the educators for working remotely…
Md.Ahsan Ul Kabir
01:29:35

Jane Choi-Doan
01:31:04
Do you offer worksheets and materials that teachers can use? (i.e. worksheet for a zoo visit or a particular museum at the different educational levels)?
rbl50@aol.com
01:31:33
I appreciate the constructivist approach to learning - purposeful curriculum where the learners do something with content and experience…. and then share… Thank you Erika

I guess for new teachers, they are already overwhelmed by the amount of conversions... so having a "template" that teachers at look at and modify from is always helpful.
